A lady’s imagination is very rapid, and while this lady’s imagination is not jumping from admiration to love to matrimony the way some of the Bennet daughters do in Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, it is certainly jumping from point to point trying to extrapolate the thoughts and opinions formulated upon viewing Compass Rose Theater’s current production, as adapted by Emma Whipday under the direction of Madeline Austin (of no relation to the playwright.) Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? You can’t handle the truth! Though I might be mixing up my courtroom dramas as this one seemed to be skirting all around the truth, only revealing parts of the truth, and there was a lot of questionable truths floating in the ether. In true Agatha Christie style, Witness For the Prosecution splashes onto The Vagabond Players stage to kick of the 2024-leg of their 108th season.

What hempen home-spuns have we swaggering here? Tis a crew of Rude Mechanicals and they indeed find themselves Ill Met By Moonlight. Some six years in the making, TRM finally gets to bring their dream production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to light. UV light, that is. Playing at the Greenbelt Arts Center through September 9th 2023 and Directed by Joshua Engel, this judiciously rendered production of Midsummer is not your grandfolks’ fairy-tale.
