Small Town Stars Theatre Company, based at the Carroll Arts Center of Westminster MD, skillfully and confidently walks a fine, fine line in its short but hilariously fun run of Avenue Q (Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx, music & lyrics; book by Jeff Whitty). STS’s production, under the direction of Sean Olsson, effortlessly navigates mature themes of sexuality, racism, internet pornography, all in the oeuvre of network children’s educational programming, complete with custom-made puppets the Jim Henson Company would be proud to associate with.

Every story is a love story. That’s the message being preached by Artistic Synergy of Baltimore’s (established 2012) production of AIDA which opened on a rainy night in Rosedale, MD. Based on the Italian language opera of the same name, Disney purchased the book rights in 1994 to turn it into an animated feature film. However, it was instead reborn as a Broadway musical with music by Sir Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice.

As I
watched The Last Night of Ballyhoo, written by Alfred Uhry and directed
by Ilene Chalmers, at the Bowie Community Theatre, I had a thought somewhere during
Act I, Scene 4: “This play really is about something.” This is
not to say that I disliked the production before that; even before coming to
that revelation I would have acknowledged the stellar set and the faultless
performances from the cast.
